Bayelsa Assembly Passes Lawmakers’ Pension Bill Into Law

BIGHT NEWS reports that, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has passed into law a controversial bill that approves gratuities for former speakers and members of the state House of Assembly.

The state House passed the bill into law on Wednesday. It’s called “Pensions for Governor’s, Deputy Governors, and members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. It was an executive bill sponsored the majority leader, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, member representing Sagbama constituency I in the State House.

Bight News gathered that, relevant sections of the provide that former members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and those of Bayelsa State Origin who served in the Old Rivers State are to enjoy a lifetime pension for their services to the state as it is applicable to former Presidents/Vice Presidents, Governors/Deputy Governors in Nigeria.

The bill provides that former Speakers of the Old Rivers State House of Assembly of Bayelsa State Origin and those of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly who served in that capacity for two years and above are qualified for a life pension of N500,000.

It also provides that those who served as members of the Houses of Assembly are entitled to a life pension of N100,000.

In a related development, the state House of Assembly also passed the Bayelsa State Health Insurance Scheme Bill into law during their Wednesday planetary. The health insurance bill was sponsored by Hon. Ebiuwou Obiyai. She is the member representing Yenagoa constituency II in the state House.
